Bunny Care Guide: What To Feed Your Bunny Rabbit / What Do Rabbits Eat?

85

By Bunniez

Feeding your bunny is a more difficult task than it may seem at first. Popular lore has it that rabbits can be fed on carrots and lettuce, however the reality is that feeding a rabbit on lettuce and carrots would kill it pretty quickly, and in a rather unpleasant fashion. There are a wide range of foods that you should not feed your rabbit, and for or an extended list of what not to feed your bunnies, you can go HERE.

The point of this article however, is to discuss what is good for your bunnies to eat. It's actually pretty simple rabbits should be fed a diet mostly comprised of grass hay (the simple stuff, otherwise often known as timothy hay. Alfalfa hay can be used as a treat, but is too high in calcium for regular feeding. For more information on hay, why it is important, and what types to feed, go HERE) or just straight grass, although the grass should always be dry.

Grass and / or hay should make up the bulk of your rabbit's diet, and should always be available to it. Make sure if you do feed grass that it has not come from anywhere that has been treated with pesticides, or could have been.

Rabbits need to eat almost constantly whilst they are awake, and the roughage and long fibers in grass and hay are excellent for keeping their digestive systems moving. It is vital that a rabbit's digestive system is always moving, so please never let your rabbit go without food, even overnight. Rabbits are crepuscular creatures, which means they tend to be more active around dawn and dusk, but they can also be active at varying times through the day and the night. Therefore they always need to have food on hand, and it should be hay or grass.

Pellets can also make up part of a rabbit's diet, but be sparing in their feeding, especially brands that contain little treats and seeds mixed in with the pellets. These foods are the equivalent of loading your rabbits up on cheeseburgers and fries, so whilst they will almost always want to eat these foods, you need to be careful about how much you feed them. Straight pellets are slightly better for your rabbit, but they are still often quite concentrated food sources, so should be fed in smaller amounts, and never as a sole source of nutrition.

Fresh Vegetables and some fruit make a great addition to a rabbit's diet, but should be fed only from 6 months onwards, and then in small amounts and introduced one at a time to a bunny's diet. Sudden dietary changes can upset a rabbit's digestive system, resulting in sickness and diarrhea which is not pleasant for owner or bunny. Carrot fed in small amounts is good for your bunny as it contains Vitamin A. Portions of apple will also go down quite well with most bunnies. You do have to be quite careful with vegetables and avoid those which can cause gas or bloating. Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli are all not a great idea. The reason you have to be so careful is the fact that a rabbit cannot pass gas or burp. This means that feeding foods which produce gas can result in bloating, pain, and even death.

Veges that are okay for bunnies include:

  • Carrot
  • Beet TOPS
  • Watercress
  • Sprouts
  • Parsely
  • Wheatgrass

There is some argument over leafy vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, spinach, and the like. Some say that they should never be fed to bunnies, others say that the darker leaf vegetables are okay in small amounts. Personally I find that it isn't worth the risk of accidentally harming the bunny simply in order to give it a wide variety of fresh vegetables. Stick with the safe foods and you can be sure that your bunny will be okay. They will not suffer if they don't become a vegetable connissuer, after all, the principle food of rabbits in the wild is simply various kinds of grass. There aren't too many vegetable gardens in the wild.

I heard that celary is bad for your bunnies because the celeary stings will get stuck in their throughts. So i dont use celary

I Thought that the information was great but you should add spinich to their diet as iron is a critical part of their diet ant they LOVE IT =)

Celery is fine but it needs to be peeled

Amanda 4 years ago

My bunny only eats carrots, pellots, and t-hay. She lives in a huge pen, that goes across our basement. She is loved way to much, and she owns more stuff then i do. She is litter trained and does lots of cool tricks. Such as play dead, beg, fetch, and she also does Yoga with us. I could not believe my eyes when I started training her. She learned very fast. I have had about 5 other bunnies before, but none of them where this smart.

That's awesome, Amanda! How lucky you are to have such a special bunny!

I have removed celery from the list temporarily as I have read some conflicting reports regarding the high water content. I'd prefer to be safe rather than sorry, and accurate rather than misleading, so once I sort through the sources I will repost the safe foods list.

This is great info. It is my first time having a bunny. He is a mixed breed, about 10-12 weeks.

We used to have a rabbit that just lived in a fenced in back yard. I assume he ate grass mostly, but we did put pellets out for him every day or so. After he was gone that corner of the yard was the greenest lawn on the whole property.

We are 4Hrs in rural area. Show quality rabbits. Pellets are the way to go. A healthy rabbit can be fed quite simply. NEVER feed lettuce as it can lead to COCSADOSIS (fatal diarrehia). Musty hay that has set on a store shelf should also be avoided. It can bring out "Snuffles" in your rabbit (sneezing/wheezing illness). Be sure to check the dates on your hay if possible. Better yet, weed someone's garden for grasses if you do not have land. It's free! You can get Show Rabbit, Purina, from Feed stores. We get it in bulk. Mustard greens are a fav our rabbit. We chop some veggies and include pear and apple clippings of twigs from our trees in the orchard. This manages the ALWAYS growing teeth. They must knaw or have a chewing ring. Some "teething" rings also are mineral/vitamin blocks. Rabbits do not need a salt lick, as do some other farm animals. Some companies like "PetCo." may have toy treats that include hard baked chew cookies and pine blocks. These are not desirable as the wood is usually treated with food colorings that can be harmful to your rabbit and definately do not want to be fed to breeding pairs as it can lead to problems down the genealogical line. Always ORGANIC, if you can. WE should be so carefull with OUR food!

I Have come across so many different things about what not to feed a rabbit ! One person says feeding lettuce can kill a rabbit pretty quickly and another person says it is ok in small quantitys. I own a very sweet lovable playful bunny, that does'nt eat much oF HIS pellets, He loves t- hay and apples and grapes, and a few other things to name a few. Will someONE please post a list of what to feed your rabbit that ALL OF US BUNNY LOVERS WILL FEEL SAFE WITH. Thanks!

I read a list of food in another page, which listed Spinach as acceptable food...I have been giving my bunnies SPINACH...I've had them for two weeks. I also take them out to my backyard to run and play..they eat my grass, but i dont let them eat anything else out there..inside i feed them pallets, timothy hay, spinach, carrots, and cilantro and sometimes apples. Is there a way i can tell if they have gas??? and is there a way to help them?

I have had a rabbit for about 3 years. Last year she got sick. I took her to a vet for treatment. The vet told me to keep my rabbit Oreo supplied with timothy hay. A little alfalfa hay is okay, but not alot because it is high in calories. She also told me not to give her much rabbit pellets because they are designed to fatten rabbits up for quick sale for meat. She told me that about 1/4 cup would be okay as a treat. This info was given to me by a vet from All Pets in Peoria Illinois.

tofresh4u 2 years ago

I've been feeding my bunny lettuce, spinach, carrots, banana, parsley, cabbage, broccoli and much more since his life began and hes had a shinier coat then all the other bunnies that we see and he"s stronger. He's been alive for 4 years so im pretty sure hes used to it.He's been through alot of stuff like he had to see his wife die and all his kids taken away,we thought e would be tromotized and sometimes we think he is,is there any signs or tromotization??and today this morning when I normally take him out into his area he was acting strange,he was just sitting there in his be and shaking!! And i didnt feed him any different!! what did i do wrong!!???

no bread for bunnies, please! they do not grow on fields which is where bunnies normally look for their dinner. stick with hay; that's the best possible food- source for them. timothy hay is a must!

my bunnies love bananas and cherries are these ok for them to eat? what else can they eat that is just around the house?

sherry_flopsy 2 years ago

to speaking of :)'s, bunnies can also eat apples, my bunny Lilo doesnt particuarly like them but most bunnies do.

i've fed Lilo the green part of the carrot, she doesnt like eating the actuall carrot. Maybe add carrot tops to the list?

i always fill my bunnies bowl up of pellets and the bunny mix. and im worried im over feeding it, but Lilo doesnt even eat half of it. Oh well.

I love my bunny Lilo, she is 7 weeks and is a half mini lop, quarter dwarf, and quarter himilayan.

I feed my bunny blueberries, banana, parsley, romaine, spring mix, peeled celery, yogurt drops, timothy hay, rabbit pellets with the bits mixed in, always fresh water, and I don't use wood chips in his cage - I use the papery kind of stuff instead. For toys he has paper tubes, rolled up paper balls, chew toys, lots of boxes to climb in and on and I have a harness I take him outside with.

Anna 2 years ago

hi i read your article on rabbit diets. i have owned rabbits for over 9 years. and been studying rabbits for over 3 years. your info is mostly correct. but i have to point out a few things. first i have to say that lettuce has no nutrition for your rabbit, so you should rarely feed it to your rabbit, secondly, you can feed your rabbit broccoli, but only the bottom stick and not the head of the broccoli. the average life span of a rabbit is usually 4 to 6 years. but if the rabbit is healthy and happy they can live up to 15 years! most people who have rabbitries tend to try different foods for their rabbit. so some information that you get can be very different because of different experiences that people have with their rabbit. rabbits can be complex and will try to hid their sickness as best as they can. it is instinct to show the predators that nothing is wrong with them. but overall i am impress with your knowledge on rabbits since not many people who own them do not know much about the animal.

Anna 2 years ago

sorry i am not done spreading my knowledge. someone asked how much food you should feed your rabbit. for a baby under 4 months you should give them as much as they want cause they need a lot to grow. but the measurements for rabbits is to multiply the weight of the rabbit by 4. then that sum is the amount you should give your rabbit in ounces. if it is a cross bred rabbit then you should give it a cup to two cups a day. but do not give them too much or else the can get obese. plus rabbits are expected to be feed around the same time everyday just like other farm animals and humans. so try not to feed your rabbit a different time each day. otherwise they can get mad and possibly sick because of the uneven times you give the rabbit food, because their stomachs has to be filled up on a regular schedule.

I am getting a mini rex bunny 6 weeks old either tonight or tomorrow. I just went out to the pet store to get the , pan for litter training the timothy hay and water bottle and a small bell ball for it to play with. I also bought boxo shavings without wood or anything. it is also oder free.

I am getting it from a breeder so she is supplying the cage and bunny and food.

Do you think if I feed it timothy hay and pellets it will be okay?

Can i feed it fruit and veges at 6 months?

how much pellets should i give it ... its only 6 weeks!

Viking 2 years ago

hello sweetpea...yes its fine to feed your rabbit pellets and hay..he might not eat the pellets in the begining ..my bunny did not like that when he was young..but he will eat it sooner or later..you also need to give him mix bunny food not only pellets and hay..but yes those two are important for rabbits..also fresh water ofcourse..provide pellets and food and hay to your rabbit all the time..make sure his bowl not empty..i fill his bowl with food every morning..altho no SO FULL just 3quarts the bowl is good..and before i sleep i put to him more if he ate what he had already..so 2times a day check on his food and once a day for the water..and ofcourse you can give him small pieces of carrots and apple with no skin or seeds do that once a day,,just small mounts that should make him happy^^

Jenny-rabbit 2 years ago

We just got a rabbit from someone who couldn't take care of it anymore. I noticed she does not like any veg.'s or fruit i put in her cage. I have tried carrot celery apple and romain lettuce and she won't touch it yet! she did run over to the t-hay when i put it in her cage and i see her eating it sometimes but not often. I wonder if she has gotten to used to eating "rabbit food" from a bag that she doesn't know what to do with anything else. Should i keep trying with the veggies? Or should i just stick to hay and pellets. I'm going to try a few other things like parsley and mustard greens but i can't keep buying this just to through it out the next day. Please Advise

Viking 2 years ago

hello Jenny-rabbit

stick with the apple..my rabbit did not eat pellets in the begining he did not touch it..now he does! most of rabbits like apple trust me..just cut some for her and dont force it on her just put the in her cage and leave her deal with it..she will eat it if not today then tomorrow.hay is important and pellets as well so just keep on feeding her those two beside the apple..you do take the skin outa apples and the seeds before giving them to her right?

lemmeh know later if she eats her apple..

Jenny-rabbit 2 years ago

thanks viking i put some apple peeled and cut into 1 inch chuncks (no seeds) in her cage a on Wednesday morning and i don't think she ate any by thursday night so i took it out. I'm just afraid to let it get old i put some romaine lettuce in their yest and if she doesn't eat any by tonight i will take it out. I know that the lettuce is not the best for them but i just want to find something she likes and i would only give it to her once a week if she does like it but don't worry i don't think she's even touched the stuff i'm gonna try parsley and mustard greens this weekend and keep putting in apple maybe a different type i have been giving her Macowans (think i sp that wrong, oh well) so maybe i'll try green apple since it has a stronger sent. I'll keep trying but if after a month she rejects everything i give her i'm just gonna give up and let her just eat the hay and 1/4 cup of pellets a day. She is a little chuby from her previous owners letting her eat all the pellets she wanted so maybe when she get's hungry she'll eat better. I'll keep you posted and thanks for the advice. Do any of you use Yesterday's New's litter it sounds like the best option and i'm gonna try it out just wondered if anyone else uses it.

hi all, my vet says that all dark green veges are fine, just keep away from iceberg lettuce and light green cabbage the dark leaves are fine, small amounts of fruit are fine dont feed rubarb, raddish tops are fine just not raddishes, rabbits are fine with most foods its just trial and error always give small amount of a new vege wait 12 hrs if no diareah then the vege is fine!oh and a great toy for them is an old phone book they love it!!oh and my rabbit is fine with carrots not peeled. my vet says i dont need to peel them, and be careful of rabbit treat foods mine had violent direah from this.

Jenny-rabbit 2 years ago

good morning,

Well my rabbit ate a few pieces of apple and i think a tinny bit of kale. She also nibbled on a piece of pare. she doesn't eat much of it though. The only way i could get her to try it was to hand feed it to her then she ate a piece of apple but wouldn't eat another. I think i need to switch her to regular pellets. Right now i am finishing off the rabit food mix that we first bought before i read not to give that to them, but since she had already been eating that brand for months i figured i finish off the bag before switching her to just t-hay pellets. So we'll see maybe when she stops getting spoiled with junk she will eat her fruits and veggies. Wow that's sad i am a mother with 2 kids and it took me this long to think of that. That's how my kids are if they are hungry enough they will eat their fruits and veg's but if they are full of junk they wont. duh blonde moment i guess Thanks for all the help!

Jenny-rabbit 2 years ago

Yesterday's New's is a litter made from recycled newspaper turned into pellets. I bought it a few days ago and my rabbit wont use it. She poops on the floor right next to it. It looks like food and maybe she doesn't want to poop on food! I don't know but it is what they recommend for rabbits b/c they can't use cedar or pine and carefresh just looked too messy for me. What do you guys use?

Jenny-rabbit 2 years ago

Melina or anyone else who wants this info,

This is the list from the Rabbit House Society of what to feed your rabbit the foods with (*) high in vit A and your rabbit should have at least one these a day the one's with (!)use sparingly b/c large amounts are toxic

Alfalfa, radish & clover sprouts

Basil

Beet greens (tops)*

Bok choy

Broccoli (mostly leaves/stems)*

Brussels sprouts

Carrot & carrot tops*

Celery

Cilantro

Clover

Collard greens*

Dandelion greens and flowers (no pesticides)*

Escarole

Green peppers

Kale (!)*

Mint

Mustard greens*

Parsley*

Pea pods (the flat edible kind)*

Peppermint leaves

Raddichio

Radish tops

Raspberry leaves

Romaine lettuce (no iceberg or light colored leaf)*

Spinach (!)*

Watercress*

Wheat grass

(!)=Use sparingly. High in either oxalates or goitrogens and may be toxic in accumulated quantities over a period of time

Here are fruits to give but remember not to give more than a tablespoon a day b/c fruit is like candy to a rabbit

Apple (remove stem and seeds)

Blueberries

Melon

Sugary fruits such as bananas and grapes should be used only sparingly, as occasional treats. Bunnies have a sweet tooth and if left to their own devices will devour sugary foods to the exclusion of healthful ones.

Since a lot of you have ?'s about feeding rabbits but don't say how old they are i am going to put this up here as well b/c you don't feed a baby the same as an adult this also came from the House of Rabbit Society:

What quantities of food should I feed babies and "teenagers"?

Birth to 3 weeks--mother's milk

3 to 4 weeks--mother's milk, nibbles of alfalfa and pellets

4 to 7 weeks--mother's milk, access to alfalfa and pellets

7 weeks to 7 months--unlimited pellets, unlimited hay (plus see 12 weeks below)

12 weeks--introduce vegetables (one at a time, quantities under 1/2 oz.)

What quantities of food should I feed young adults? (7 months to 1 year)

introduce timothy hay, grass hay, and oat hays, decrease alfalfa

decrease pellets to 1/2 cup per 6 lbs. body weight

increase daily vegetables gradually

fruit daily ration no more than 1 oz. to 2 oz. per 6 lbs. body weight (because of calories)

What quantities of food should I feed mature adults? (1 to 5 years)

Unlimited timothy, grass hay, oat hay, straw

1/4 to 1/2 cup pellets per 6 lbs. body weight (depending on metabolism and/or proportionate to veggies)

Minimum 2 cups chopped vegetables per 6 lbs. body weight

fruit daily ration no more than 2 oz. (2 TBL) per 6 lbs. body weight.

What quantities of food should I feed senior rabbits? (Over 6 years)

If sufficient weight is maintained, continue adult diet

Frail, older rabbits may need unrestricted pellets to keep weight up. Alfalfa can be given to underweight rabbits, only if calcium levels are normal. Annual blood workups are highly recommended for geriatric rabbits.

Geoff Joyce 2 years ago

I have a beautifull 15 week old bunny called Crystal. She is doing very well with the litter training and is becoming a very cheeky and playfull friend. She eats a constant supply of Meadow Hay and I give her (As advised by my Vet) a meal ONLY in the evenings. She has about half a cup of good quality pelletts and a small amount of carrot, brocoli and as a occassional treat I give her a very small piece of apple. Im going to start to feed her a more mixed diet. Ideally I think Thistles, Dandelion and dot leaves are an essential part of a rabbits diet. Only pick these outdoors if you are 100% sure there has been no use of pestisides. She loves to eat that's for sure, but I think if she could have a say in the matter she would rather opt to eat the tassels on the edge of my Girlfriend expensive rug:-)

Make sure your Rabbitt has a constant supply of fresh water.

Geoff Joyce 2 years ago

Sounds like your are a smart rabbit owner. Nice to see there are a few on this site. (I think most, yes most a few of you do seem like smart rabbit owners, of the people on her are under the age of 13 who's parents got them a rabbit for a pet, have no clue what to do and most don't seem very interested in finding out what to do unless it's fun for them) Sorry if that sounds harsh to some of you but if you think it sounds harsh to you then you are one of them and I think it is very sad to think of these poor animals suffering b/c they are being raised by people who got a rabbit b/c they thought it would be a cute easy pet to have.

there are some really good magazines out there just about rabbits and the oxbow website has great info regarding feeding. personally the list provided here is very small compared to what the house rabbit society, my vet and many other resources consider rabbit friendly foods. you wouldn't like eating the same thing every day so why would your pet.

A white rabbit with brown ears and red eyes walked into my ground floor apartment 2 weeks ago. At first I tried to shew her (I think it's a her...to smart to be a male) out but she wasn't having it. So I borrowed a huge dog cage and started feeding it whatever I had in the fridge...bread...fruit loops...anything that didn't use to breath. When I was able to I bought her some pellets and hay. I am so glad I came across this web site, I have now fallen in love with PJ (I believe she was a dog in another life!)and to think I could have killed her haunts me. PJ's hurdles are not over....I use to work at an animal shelter and the rabbits would stay there forever, no one would adopt them and they always seemed so lonely. I can not keep PJ but can not imagine handing her over to the local animal shelter.....any suggestions?

I am a recent bunny owner, I have had my male bunny, tubs, for about 3 months now and he isn't scared of anything. When I let him run around, he will run circles around me, always wants to be pampered. I have a dog and they do well together, they don't like each other because they are both attention hogs, but they get along. Just the other day my dog growled at the bunny, and the bunny attacked him a little, he just kept nipping at the dogs legs until he left him alone. If you just give your bunny attention, they will love you and follow you around the house, it's very cute.

Sammy  2 years ago

I saw a few things above that were sort of frightening. I have 4 happy healthy bunnys. and I just wanted to say that you should NEVER under any circumstances feed your bunny-boos bananas. They cause them "wheepy eye" which causes a goo over one of your rabbit's eyes. it takes them about 2 1/2 days to pass away one day they're fine, the next they're sleepy and lethargic and the next they are already gone. so please, no bananas

I think we've taken in an abandoned rabbit left by it's owners who left him or her last week. Just can't leave it out to die.

Annabelle 2 years ago

We have recently brought two 7 week old otter rex bunnys, Peter and Duke. They are brothers and are from a good breeder with nice healthy parents. We have had them for 3 days and really love them. We have been feeding them on grass and hay and some dried food. They have also some carrot and veggies, but the vet told us that they should not have too much. We have been a little bit worried as Peter seems quite small and bony. We weighted them today and Duke weights 720g and Peter weights 580g. This could just be that Peter is the smallest bunny of the litter or that he is a smaller build rabbit. I would really like know how much the adverage 7 week old rex (or simular breed) rabbit should weight. So any commets or suggestions would be helpful! Thanks :-)

lauren 2 years ago

i have a rabbit about 3 months old and i was needing some info. on what all beddings you can use? and how to train them? so if so could any one that knows please let me no asap

Annabelle 2 years ago

lauren - We have only just got 2 baby rabbits but know quite a lot about them. (we have had guinea pigs for years)!!! If you use a hutch then put a thick layer of newspaper covering the entire floor of each compartment. Then add a layer of sawdust on top of that. In the dark (night time) compartment put lots for hay (on top of the newspaper and sawdust) in there for them to lie in and to eat.

For litter training fill a tray with some sort of litter. Do not use clumping litter. and place the tray in a corner of the hutch. Look on this site to learn how to litter train them: http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/rabbits/ht/littertr

i hope this is useful!!!! :)

Peg 2 years ago

Hi everyone, I just wanted to post that Timothy Hay, Fresh water daily, some greens and limited treats are the best for your rabbit. Please for any amount of information you need for your precious bun go to Rabbit.org or my favorite a place I volunteer at is a Rabbit Rescue with over 300 bunnys is the Bunnybunch.org for everything you need or want to know. You can call them anytime and they will give you a wealth of info for your bunny. They have vet referrals for Rabbit Savvy Vets. Be sure to give your rabbits timothy hay at least 2 handfuls a day. If you do not feed them hay they can suffer thru GI Stasis. That is where there fecal pellets get really small to non existent and they can die within 24 hours. For all you new bunny owners keep in mind your rabbit is very fragile. I noticed a lot of people do not know what to feed there rabbit, please do the research but simply put check out Rabbit.org, Bunnybunch.org and the best book ever for everything about your rabbit is Rabbits for Dummies (that is a book) You can go to any bookstore or just buy it on Amazon. Oh, I wanted to mention that the Bunny Bunch in Montclair California has a Boutique for everything your bunny needs and best of all it is super cheap. You can get a huge bag of good quality hay for $11.00and tons of treats, and chews for your bun. Don't forget or if you did not know rabbits teeth keep growing therefore they need wood chews to grind there teeth and incisors down. They grow 4 to 5 inches per year that is why they need safe non toxic wood to chew on. Very importnat that it is not just any wood. You can go to any Rabbit rescue or just have it shipped to you. The bunnybunch.org ships anywhere in the U.S. very cheap too!! I wanted to mention also every rabbit can be liter trained. All you need for your rabbit to make it fun for your bun and easy on you is....... X pen, plastic liter pan (or cat liter box) filled with hay because rabbits like to eat and use the bathroom at the same time, safe toys, chews, plain cardbored boxes to tear up and have a safe hidey place, a ceramic water bowel and food dish, good quality timothy hay and pellets. I like oxbox pellets because the calcium content is a little less compaired to other ones. To much calcium in your bunnys diet can cause sludge.Word of advice please do not lock your bunny in a cage all day. They do not belong in a cage. Please look at the bunnybunch and look at there boutique they have x pens for your bun. They can be set up anywhere in your house or apartment. Your bunny will thank you. They are very loving and social. FYI, bunnys do better with a mate that is spayed of course. PLease spay or neuter your bun soon because 85% of rabbits will get uterine cancer and males will get testicular cancer. I am trying to address alot of the questions but I have so many run on sentences and no paragraphs, sorry for that. I just want people to have a happy bun and make it easier for people on not giving up there bun at a later date. Like I said earlier I volunteer at a rabbit rescue called the bunny bunch in Montclair Ca. and it is so sad to see how many people give up there bunnys and let the loose. There are so many with injuries and some paralized bunnys but there are also tons of happy buns waiting for there forever home. Please check it out rabbit rescues are everywhere thru out the U.S. A lot of people didn't know there was such a thing. You should volunteer it is so rewarding and you learn so much. They all need help and the best part is u can do whatever you want even if you want to take them out of there pen and groom them or feed them veggies or set up events. Check it out please and if you come across a site please let people know about the above websites I gave you because at one time or another you will need them and you can refer back anytime. helpingpaws.wordpress.com is my little blog you can check it out and comment if you would like. I have a lot of info for bunnies as well on that site and videos. Oh i forgot to mention that you need to get your rabbits nails clipped every 6 to 8 wks if you have a rabbit rescue near you they do it for FREE. I wanted to mention to if your rabbit stops eating certain food such as pellets or hay or even veggies or they drop out of his mouth or his mouth is wet or dewlop he could have a tooth problem. Take your bun to the vet whenever they do not act the same. Any change in your bun can be a matter of life or death. When in doubt take him to a "Rabbit Savvy Vet: not just any vet. Hope I have helped some of you. By the way my blog needs to be updated I will do that soon I now have 4 house rabbits and not just one. Love them. Peg :)

mew 2 years ago

i need some one to reply this question ;;;;

my rabbit named cuddles has a white urine they called it

sludge . what should i feed to my rabbit if he has sludge :Bladder sludge (also called hypercalcinuria or

hypercalciuria) is a thickening of the urine that never

forms into stones. It is comprised of any number of

calcium salts and does not flow like normal liquid urine.

We are not sure why but sludge does not form stones. It

remains the consistency of chalk or fine sand and is a

white to gray color. If sludge is very thick, it can have

consistency of toothpaste. When felt, this sludge can be

smooth, have finely granular texture, or even have gritty

texture. Sludge can form in the kidneys or ureters, but

most sludge is noted in the bladder and suspected to have

formed there.

Bayle 2 years ago

I Was just wondering, I have a bunny named Miley and I just found this bizzare bump on each side of her stomach i was just wondering if it was normal for them to have that or, not. I feed her Pellets,Carrots,Crackers,Lettis,And hay.

Are any of those the cause if those bumps where not supposed to be there? Thank you I really need this answer!!!

Annabelle 2 years ago

Bayle - I really sugest you take Miley to the vet as soon as you can. Im not sure what that is shes got but it doesnt sound nice and could lead to something much worse. Take her soon and im sure she will be ok but may nead treatment or anti-biotics. Also stop feeding her the lettis as it is not good for them because it contains too much water.

Bellaluvscoco&millie 2 years ago

Bayle- If I were you I would NOT feed her crackers- It can cause the bunny to get very obese and possibly die. Crackers are also WAY to high in sugar and carbs, So that lump on Miley's Tummy is NOT a good sign!

Dani 2 years ago

Bayle- I agree w/ Bellaluvscoco&millie , but another possible reason Miley may have those lumps on her stomach is because of the letuce you fed her. you should *NEVER* give your bunny letuce, she can get diarea, or even cause death to your bunny, and it *Has* happened before multiple times!!!

Bestbunny 2 years ago

My rabbit is so finicky when it comes to eating. He has his pellets and timothy hay and he loves carrots and brocilli. However, he doesn't like "fresh" fruit. He will only eat dried apples, strawberries, cranberries raisins. It's like he doesn't like the wetness of the fruit but doesn't mind it in veggies. He also likes the occassional yogurt treat.

pebbles 2 years ago

I have two Bunnies. both girls, budda and pebbles. i have them for 16 years now. best-bunny the reason your rabbit won't eat the some fruit is because to some rabbits its toxic, for example most rabbits will eat carrots but if the don't don't force them as it could kill them. basically if they won't eat its toxic.

hope this helps all you bunny lovers!!!!!!!!!

Bunny lover99 2 years ago

Hey guys i just got my bunny Jan.26.10 and let me give u all the tips i no. Ok, first lets start with food. Feed them 2 hand fulls of Timothy hay{plain!!!} and 1 hand full of pellets each day. Dried fruits- cranberries, raisins, and apples. The only frsh fruit they should really eat is apples. Veggies are healthy so give them veggies like- carrots, celery, and... LETTUCE. THEY LOVE LETUCE. Give them these veggies/fruits about 3 times in 2 days. Now everyone is asking me about the baths. NO! NO! NO! Bunnies clean themselves. They lick their paws and rub it on their face, ears, etc. Now about their cage: Bunnies should have at least one toy{ chewable or not} in theri cage. They should have a hay bed. Fill this bed with cotton to make it comfy and cozy. The bedding I reccomend is from petco. It is the white CAREFRESH ultra. It is nice and comfy. Also they should have paper pellet litter. They shouild have a litter box to put this in. Its not food... Its where they will train themselves to go to the bathroom in. The food just throw on the ground. WATER IN A LITTLE BOTTLE HANGING IN OR ON THE CAGE. They should drink it like a bottle. These are very important and if you follow my tips a healthy, friendly, happy, and SMART bunny is GUARANTEED!!! Congratz on ur bunny and follow these tips to make u and ur bunny healthy etc. like me and mine are... BTW u can get all these things besides the hay bed in PETCO!!!

I just adopted a baby bunny, and I was told that he is ABOUT 2 months old. How much grain can I feed him? Also, how old can he start eating veggies/fruits? I heard that a rabbit can start eating veggies/fruits at about 4 months, but since I am not 100% sure of his age, should I start giving him veggies/fruits in October (the bunny will be ABOUT 4 months old ) or should I wait until November/December just to be safe? What are the consequences of eating a veggie when younger than 4 months?

I just got my new bunny two weeks ago. We named him Nathaniel. He is very adorable. We feed him pellets, timothy hay, carrots, romaine lettuce, little bits of cucumber, and pieces of apple. From looking at the comments, i hear some people saying that lettuce isn't really good at all for him. If not, what other greens is he allowed to eat? And is spinach ok. I really don't want to rip up handfuls of grass from the yard! Also do bunnies really like bananas too?

she is healthy and very friendly.

I give her 3 handfulls of food throughout the day

and some carrots apples and grass here and there!

she did not have any diaria however, she did pee a lot for 2 days! do i feed her too much or not enough?

its like everytime i feed her she eats soo fast cause she is like starving!

Shannon 20 months ago

My bunny eats bananas, is that alright? I put a broccoli stem in her food bowl and she hasn't touched it. What I'm worried about is she is six weeks. Should I stick to grass (fleas... bugs... risky?) and pellets (yes, with seeds because I live in a small town with no options, and she doesn't like this much). This was a good article anywho (:

Steveballer11 20 months ago

I used to feed my bunny carrots and carrots only. Until I read this artical. Should I be woried

Brenda 20 months ago

Steve- You should be worried. They need more than just carrots to survive. Can you imagine yourself only eating one food and staying healthy? I don't think so. Pellets would definately help him get some much needed fiber and vitamins. Purina is the best brand.

hey guys i decided about 2 and half weeks ago that i wanted a rabbit. about 3-4 years ago i looked after a rabbit for my friend when she went over seas for a year and he just keeped growing and growing and growing she came back and no longer wanted him so i keeped him but she anted the cage back so he stayed in the bathroom only at night and walked around the house during the day. affortunalty he became way...... to big so a gave him to an old lady and now he lives in her garden and runs aroung with equilly sized dogs and is living wonderfully with her... so back to the begining i have now decided to get a dwarf rabbit and since we have moved houses since then we have a court yard with half grass and half brick and is perfect for him he is still very younge and i cant only get him on the 20th on october this year he is white and light grey with one blue eye and one brown eye. he is sooo cute so he is going to be liveing in thecourt yard with my bird which cant fly as he broke his wing. i wanted to know if at that age with he be fine on his own or should he sleep inside for the first week or so? :)

I've had my rabbit since last March and nothing has ever happened to him apart from him being scratched by a cat once... but that's a different story! He's a Japenese harlequin and I love him so much! He'll be 1 at the end of January! I feed him carrots, cauliflower, cabbage and occasionaly a bit of parsnip, but he doesn't seem to like it! I've fet him on a few different foods and he LOVES 'burgess lifelong' which are these fruity pellets which he really likes. I avoid museli mix foods because they are unhealthy for your rabbit as they tend to pick out the sweet unhealthy peices and that means that it is not getting all of the vitimins that it needs to survive. Everyone's been a great help!

Hi, the person who posted the comment about stupid names-my rabbit's called Russell, very individual don't you think?

i need to know what bunnys cant eat???? first time bunny owner here

Dylan 16 months ago

It is a lot easier to find out what they can eat rather than what they can't eat, because the list of what they can not eat is a very long list.

Here are the main things they eat:

Rabbit pellets

Carrots

Silver Beet

Grass

Hay

Hope this helps you.

Dylan 16 months ago

P.S, they also eat cabbage.

Dylan 16 months ago

NEVER give your rabbit lettuce. It can kill them because of all of the toxins inside them.

need help asap! 16 months ago

I just got my rabbit about 2/3 weeks ago and I feed him celery brussel sprout leafs and red capsicum. We could not find hay at the pet shops so we bought this sort of bedding hay that he some times nibbles at, the pet shop said it was ok because they sometimes do eat it but I want proper hay! We take him onto the grass in our backyard after bowl of vegies (Breakfast) and then take him out again around 6 and leave him till 8 so he can have a decent meal out of the grass, we live in a place where it rains alot and when it doesn;t rain the grass is wet so he eats wet grass. I love him so much and I feel so horrible not knowing whats good for him! PLEASE HELP!!!! btw I live in aus

Dylan 16 months ago

If your rabbit does not have a pen that does not have contact with the ground, you could open the door to his/her pen, make a ramp onto the grass, and then make a fence with chicken mesh.

Dylan 16 months ago

Rabbits eat:

Carrots

Silver Beet

Apples

Spinach

Hay

Rabbit Pellets

Grass

My rabbits eat their bedding also.

We feed our rabbits & cavies celery. I cut it up into 1 inch long pieces. There's also conflicting info about broccoli & cabbage(NOT for cavies), to feed, or not to feed....? Also radishes, some say yes, others no....? It also seems unreasonable to me, to keep all bunnies under 6 months old, away from the fresh produce.......hmmm...?

Hi! I have 2 rabbits and 1 got pregnant! They play with tunnels and balls with bells in them! NEVER FEED IT LETTUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rabbits most of all want to play with YOU! They love attention and a friend1 Playing with your rabbit and offering it treats is the best way to gain its trust! If you only have 1 rabbit they tend to get a little lonely so keep it active and ecxercise it for an hour a day! Let him out on the grass constantly watching it! Rabbits like banana peels and pears too! (only feed scarcely though) Always throw in fresh hay daily to your rabbit and feed sugery fruits only as occasional treats! Hope this helps and have fun with your rabbit!

Hello, I have a 2 year old bunny Fredy! he eats every night a big bowl of veggies, about 3 big leafs of kale (he loves kale), 2 carrots cut in half, than I mix it up one day I give him mint, parsley, or carrot tops.

He always has a shoe box full of fresh timothy hay, and a small bowl of exact rainbow by kytee.

Because he eats veggies everyday he never drinks water so I don't even provide him with it. I have read that is normal as long as they eat their veggies. As treats he loves banana, apple, berries, and he will give his life for a potato chip and cheerios. I only give him the last 2 items once a week.

Hope this helps and remember give your bunny lots of love lay down on the floor with them and they will folp next to you!

New Bunny Owner  14 months ago

Hi I have a question about bedding I have been using softwood savings and I was reading that this causes problems in their liver, what kind of bedding to you use?

Hugsabugs  14 months ago

Hi I just got a bunny! I have had rabbits in the past and I'm not conpleatly clueless about them. She is almost 7 weeks old and was taken from her mother at about five weeks ( I know that Its to young I did not know that until I had fallen in love with her) I have had her for almost a week and she seams very helthy. I was wondering if there was something special I might could give her to help her sence she had such an unfair setback. Oh and she's getting unlimited hay and pellets. Well and water ofcorse. She's very active and a Dutch mix if that changes anything. Thx =)

Hugsabugs  14 months ago

Hello New Bunny Owner, Cungratz on ur new bunny!! To answer you question there are many optiones for a bunny bedding. If it's inside a good bedding to try might be care fresh they make a bedding made from papper. It's very obsorbent ( that's great if it's inside cause the number one cause of smell from the cage is little thunder pee) and if your bunny desires to eat it (and a lot do) it will not cause your bunny to be sick. (that's VERY inportent cause the can not throw up). If you would rather us hay that is also a good idea your bunny can eat it (of corse!!) and that love to dig in it. However there is a down side it's not very good at getting read of pee so the pen may smell. A hood idea if your using hay would be to put cat litter in the catch pan to keep your pen from smelling. But ONLY if it's in a catch pan not the pen and your bunny can't reach it, if ingested and most rabbits will try it, it's very poisenose. Hope this helps enjoy the bunny. :)

Hugsabugs  14 months ago

I'm very sorry for the all the typeos I'm using an iPod and it very easy to do on the touch screen. I did mean to say little Thumpers pee not thunder. There were many others but I do belive you will see what I meant. Oh and my iPod will also switch the words thanks to the not so awesome spell check. Sorry agin. :)

my bunny loves eating carrot and see nothing wronge with it at all

natasha 14 months ago

I just got a bunny. She is a domesticated bunny but she literally ran up to my husband and "marked" him on the golf course. I have been feeding her unlimited timothy hay, 1/2 cup pellets, a handful of sunflower seeds, 1/2 cup of dark greens like chard and dandelion, romaine & red leaf lettuce and 1/2 a carrot daily. She does not like fruit. She does however like plain cheerios which I only give her one as a treat. I do not know much about bunnies but she is so amazing. I have never had a bunny before and she will follow me around the house and circle me. She loves to rub all over me too and the other day she marked me. She does not particularly like my dog as she sees her as more of an annoyance than a friend, but they do well together. I limit their time together until they are more aquainted. Right now they only share about an hour a day together total. The rest of the time I divide between the bunny and my dog being in their cage or roaming the house. My rabbit does not like to be picked up most of the time, but sometimes she will let me pick her up and hold her against my chest. She does not like to be cornered, and is a very smart escape artist. She is not fully housetrained, but I would like to train her. Her "droppings" do not bother me so much as they are not like a cat or dog, but I know she is intelligent enough to learn to use a litter box and I would like advice on training her too. I just ordered her a harness and leash so I can take her for walks outside. She seems to be very happy. I think she was someone's pet who abandoned her and thought they could let her free...my husband is in the military and we see this kind of thing a lot. I plan on keeping her forever :) I Love her so much :) Named her Nivens after Alice in Wonderland! She is all white with a brown stripe. I do not know about rabbit breeds to tell what kind she is. Any advice on her breed and litter box training would be awesome :) Thanks

Never ever feed a rabbit lawn mower cut grass, the bits are too small and are already fermenting. when the rabbit eats it it will cause fermentation gases to build up in there stomach and they will die from bloat very very quickly.

Hi, i am getting a bunny for easter, i've had quite a few bunnys over the years, but none seem to last over a year or so, they were all kept in a warm barn outside, but this one is going to be kept in the house, do you think his or her life span will be longer indoors ?

denise 13 months ago

i have had two bunnys my first ate everything he was about 14 when he died.my new bunny is more picky but he loves most of the stuff that is bad for him.my first loved the same but he lived a long time my new bunny he is almost three but he gets sick easily i think it's cause i gave him flowers like dandylions and wild chamomile but he was fine before the flowers what should i do should i continue to feed him the good stuff and i think i will never give him flowers again.

Bianca 13 months ago

I have had one rabbit and he died from the heat so it is a good idea to keep the cage out of the sun (although it was a 35 degree day...and we were away) We feed him grass, hay, pellets, asian greens, carrots, apple and he enjoyed watermelon alot but only in VERY small quantities. He lived for about 5 years.

I live in Australia and in the supermarkets they sold pellets alone and pellets mixed with grains and seeds my rabbit never liked the seeds is this normal??

Laure-Anne 12 months ago

The business about the lettuce is silly. Consider the difference between grass and romaine/leaf lettuce - there isn't much. My rabbit's vet even recommends a decent portion of those, along with fresh herbs (ex. parsley, coriander), and other greens (ex. mustard greens, collard greens, kale, etc). I feed these to my rabbit and guinea pigs every day with their constant supply of hay/grass, and they haven't ever had soft stools, let alone diarrhea (and I know this because I check and clean the litter boxes frequently). So a word to those that are afraid of feeding a rabbit lettuce because they're under the impression that it's dangerous: as long as it's introduced slowly, it is a very healthy, and recommended addition to the diet.

Thanks for the really great post! I've had a really great time reading it :)

I love bunnies a lot and have had them since I was 7. I've had 4 bunnies so far as I only keep one at a time. My bunnies have all been eating lettuce, cabbage and grass and have been perfectly healthy on every check-up to the vet. I know tomatoes don't work well with their digestive system though.

Thanks for all the information!

My rabbit is wild (LEGAL!) an Eastern Cottontail. And she's georgous. My cat brought her in when she was barely a week old and we nursed her like we were supposed to, we tried to let her go, but she wouldn't go, so we kept her. She eats all sorts of things, but I'm not sure what to feed her because everything people write is about domestic breeds. Can anyone tell me what to feed her or should I feed her the same as a domestic rabbit?

I have two bunnies and I've had them for about two months. In the beginning they ate mostly hay. But now they're not really eating as much. Theyre not even touching their hay and they only eat the colorful pieces in their pellets. I've been giving them the popcorn vegetable stick treats. But they're barely eating that as well. When I went to the pet store, I was told to feed them kale. They absolutely love it but it has been giving them soft stool. Fruits and vegetables in general have given my bunnies soft stool. I'm struggling to find a food that they enjoy and will stick with. I do give my bunnies vitamins in their water. It's actually pretty surprising that they havent been eating as much because my bunnies recently started mating and I'm expecting a liter in the next few weeks. Every website suggests different foods to feed or not to feed a rabbit and every vet has different suggestions as well. I would suggest mostly hay, pellets and the occasional fruit or vegetable. One of my bunnies just learned how to thump and like clockwork every night between 10pm to 12am she thumps. I've heard that thumping only really happens when something bad is about to happen or if your rabbit is scared. But my bunny does it when shes playing with her brother. I've found that letting them out of the cage to play for an hour before I go to sleep helps. Tonight for the first time I gave them a bath, I've heard mixed things about baths but my bunnies absolutely loved it. It was a whole new adventure for them. So far it seems like theyre tired out from their bath so hopefully theyll let me and my entire family sleep tonight!

I am getting a Dwarf rabbit i have a few questions, How big can a dwarf rabbit get, and can you get the hay from a grocery store or do you have to go to a pet store? and can they live off just hay and vegies? Thanks if anyone can answer all my questions

cat 4 months ago

wow, just popped online to see if there were any new, exciting diet suggestions for my rabbits, lol! They are FGs, had them for about 6 weeks now so are 14 wks old. They live in a chicken coop (just them, no chickens!) so apart from grass, they get hay and pellets every day, and we also offer them...lettuce (aarghh!), capsicum, strawberries, grape leaves, spinach, spring onions, apples, carrots, every herb in the book (they love them all, especially basil and parsley), tomatoes...you name it, they've been offered it. They reject what they don't like...carrots, in particular, although they like the tops! They run around every day, are bright eyed and friendly and poos are all good. I think a lot of care and a lot of love + offer them such a choice that they can take what works for them.

I have read in numerous books that too much lettuce can be fatal for rabbits as it can cause constipation and diarrhea, and can sometimes even result in death. I love your hub though, it is great!

I'm planning on getting my first bunny in a couple weeks and want to do what's best from day one. What types of things are best for bunnies to chew on. I was told that the ears of corn that places sell to feed squirrels/birds were good for bunnies?? Also, can you feed them dandelions from the yard as long as it hasn't been treated? Should you peel/wash carrots before feeding them and are the whole carrots better than the baby carrots?? Thanks!!

Me and my bf just got a satan bunny and he loves to play/ chew on the carpet. i read that it clots in the stomach... does anyone have ideas about what to get in place of the carpet

My bunny has been eating bread for years. Sometimes he chooses bread over carrot when I have them both in front of him. He's been to the vet on numerous occasions and been perfectly fine. Maybe you should take your bunnies to the vet. There might be something wrong with them.

I don't think it's the bread specifically.

Good luck!

sara 2 months ago

Melissa-

The carpet chewing might be a sign that your rabbit is bored or is not getting enough exercise. I would suggest stimulating your rabbits brain and body with toys. Like: cardboard boxes, telephone book pages (remove the cover), wood chews, straw balls, empty cardboard tubes (from tp or paper towels). This seemed to help Orion stop chewing carpet so much.

Hope this helps.

@Sara, is it safe for the bunny to be chewing cardboard and stuff like the toilet paper tubes you suggested and paper? My bunny chews on everything and I'm always taking it from him. I worry that swallowing some of it might affect him negatively. Is it actually safe?

This was great info and I really want a bunny my family had a bunny once and it ran away ): but no suprise because it lived in a box.....

Matildatherabbit 2 months ago

To the people who feed rabbits hamburger and donuts-are you effing kidding me? You are killing that rabbit. Rabbits are vegetarians, the poor rabbit was obviosuly starving and desperate for whatever food it could get. I'm sure it died not long after you knowingly let it eat meat. Rabbits should ONLY eat grass hays (but not much of alfalfa after they are weaned), pellets (not too much-certainly not an entire bowl full-depending on the size about 1/4 cup a day or so)Oxbow preferably, assorted fresh veggies from a rabbit safe list-you can find one at www.adoptarabbit.org under "health and diet" and occasional fruit treats. High in calcium veggies such as kale should be given in smaller portions and it is an ongoing debate about carrots and even carrot tops.

I just got a dwarf bunny and I have no idea what to give her(idk if it is acctually a her yet because its hard to tell when they are little). All I know is that she can eat her bunny food. She is small, about the size of my hand, and she eats a lot of her bunny food pellet things. She is also very bony, but has a chubby tummy. Idk if this is normal? Please help! :) Thanks!

Hello i hav had rabbits for over 15 years! I have always used the excel rabbit food in a green bag as the pellets are really good in preventing there teeth growing in to there gums, hay also plays a huge role in a rabbits diet! I have always given my rabbits a small piece of apple with no skin as a treat! Plenty of fresh water everyday!!! My rabbit is almost 10 and is loving life haha :)
